Supporting Your Grandchild’s Mental Health

Children's drawing of a rainbow with the phrase "If you can be anything, be kind." Two figures holding hands are at the bottom.

This engaging discussion equips grandparents with the insight and tools to better understand, connect with, and support their grandchildren’s mental health—while also strengthening family relationships.

Participants gain a clear, accessible understanding of how children and teens develop, why behaviours show up the way they do, and how today’s pressures and social norms are shaping young people’s emotional worlds.

The workshop also addresses the unique role grandparents play within the family system, offering guidance on how to support their adult children (the parents), and how to show up as a steady, trusted presence.

A strong focus is placed on practical communication skills—how to have meaningful conversations, respond in supportive ways, and create space for grandchildren to open up. Grandparents also learn to recognize when something may be wrong, including key warning signs of mental health challenges, and what steps to take when they are concerned.

Key areas covered include:

  • Understanding child and teen development and behaviour

  • Navigating social norms and modern pressures

  • Supporting parents while respecting boundaries

  • Recognizing warning signs and knowing when to act

  • Communicating in ways that build trust and connection

The experience is intended to be interactive and reflective, with real-life scenarios, guided discussions, and practical takeaways participants can apply immediately.
