Kelty On-Line Therapy Program Announced

Help is just a click away, as VCH introduces the Kelty Online Therapy Service

Recently, the Kelty Patrick Dennehy Foundation donated $500,000 to VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation to help fund the development of the Kelty Online Therapy Service at Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) - an innovative set of online tools and services to expand support for patients and families impacted by mental illness.

The Kelty Online Therapy Service will offer both self-help and therapist-guided online programs that address common mental health issues. The programs will comprise a series of learning modules that use video, animation and interactive tools such as games, workbooks and role-plays. The modules will be available anytime to anyone, anywhere in the world.

The project is being led by Dr. Christine Korol, a VGH psychologist with extensive experience in integrating technology in evidence-based therapeutic practice, and by Dr. Theo De Gagne, the Regional Psychology Practice Leader at VGH. "What will be unique about the Kelty Online Therapy Service is that we will create our own library of interactive courses, including depression, anxiety, grief, addictions and more. Patients will be able to access the programs whether they are on an inpatient unit, outpatient group or connected to a therapist in the community - and therapists in different services will be able to see the work their patients have previously completed, improving continuity of care," Dr. Korol explains.

The online therapy service will also provide interim support for patients waiting for referrals. It will give patients the flexibility to get treatment outside of regular business hours and from their homes. The on-demand access also means greater accessibility for individuals living in remote areas where counselling services are not as widely available or for those who are unable to leave the home.

The development of the program is underway with plans to release the first module by the end of 2014. The Kelty Patrick Dennehy Foundation is proud to support this cause to significantly improve the lives of those affected by mental illness - closing the gaps and bringing us closer to completing the circle of care.

The Foundations gift is part of VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation $82 million campaign to create a new Mental Health Centre that will dramatically improve how patients are able to access care and the environment in which their healing takes place.

The new, eight level, 90,000 square foot mental health centre - named Joseph & Rosalie Segal Family Health Centre in recognition of the family's $12 million lead gift - will replace the badly deteriorating Health Centre, currently located at West 12th Avenue and Health Street. It will look and feel completely different from what exists today. With 100 private patient rooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom, it will be the largest purpose-built facility of its kind in the province caring for people with mental illness from all walks of life.

Kelty Mental Health Resource Centre Opening at New Hope Centre at Lions Gate Hospital

Hope is on the Way

The HOpe Centre (The Greta and Robert H. N. Ho Psychiatry and Education Centre), which has been taking shape at the corner of 13th Street and St. Andrew's Avenue on the Lions Gate Hospital campus in North Vancouver is slated to be fully operational by October.

A visionary facility that will provide enhanced integration of both inpatient and outpatient mental health services, the HOpe Centre will offer an unprecedented synergy of compassionate support and resources for those experiencing mental illness.

One special feature of this support will be a comprehensive information resource centre for individuals and families struggling with mental health issues. This new information centre, to be named The Kelty Dennehy Mental Health Resource Centre, was made possible through a $500,000 donation from the Kelty Patrick Dennehy Foundation.

"We're hoping the resource centre becomes a focal point where people will not only be able to get resources about mental illness, but will also be able to gather and seek out others who are dealing with similar issues," says Ginny Dennehy. "Having funds available for community education is critical in helping all people understand the signs, symptoms and issues surrounding mental health."

The Dennehy resource centre will include both a large resource room and a smaller resource room, together featuring a comfortable seating area, computer stations with internet access, a TV-DVD player and educational literature including books, journals and brochures with information about mental illness.

As a centre for clinical excellence, the contemporary-style HOpe Centre also features The Djavad Mowafaghian UBC Medical Education Centre and a permanent home for BC Ambulance Services. Inherently healing in its design, The HOpe Centre has a lightness, openness and accessibility that helps dissolve the stigma of mental illness.
